a rant.

warning: if you didn't attend middle school youth group, you won't understand anything i'm talking about.

as many of you probably know, i'm working an SPU office job over the summer. one of my biggest struggles is not buying 40 new itunes songs while "joyfully" filing. i decided to take a little trip in my time machine and listen to old music that was decomposing on my ipod. this brought me to the genre of contemporary christian music(aka stuff i cannot STAND now). once upon a time, young brittney used to rock out to relient k, rebecca st. james and (dare i say it?) michael w. smith. you know, all the classics. i thought a wiki distraction was just what the doctor ordered and proceeded to search all my old favorites. relient k is putting out the same sort of music and still failing at hitting mainsteam, rebecca st james is some kind of hallmark channel tv star and michael w smith is probably doing what he does best...creating emotionally heavy worship songs that church ladies will always drag their husbands/children to.

there was one musician whose story stuck out to me over the rest. jennifer knapp was always someone i thought of as a psuedo emo, alternative, christiany rock chick and i wasn't entirely surprised when i read that she had come out. what i was surprised (and frankly horrified) about was the way she was blacklisted from her christian entertainment community. wiki talked about how she had to move out of the country because of the ignorance the western evangelical movement showed her. i'm not extremely political and getting involved in any sort of heated argument terrifies me but i dont see anything Christ-like about this scenario. one personal piece of information hits the street and suddenly that musician is deemed unworthy or somehow less of a musician? ohhhhhhhh...christian media community...how you frustrate me.

i dont think i'm going to turn on 105.3 anytime soon but i did find this song about modern-day christianity and homosexuality that im pretty into.
